Standedge Tunnel Trip

Thursday 17 May 2018 07:46am

Last Thursday, Year 5 visited Standedge Tunnel as part of our Rivers and Canals topic for this half term.
When we arrived (after watching Ice Age on the coach!) we were met our leaders for the day. They were Cathy, Katie and Gillian. Before we set off walking down the tow path, Katie taught us an important acronym to keep safe near the water - SAFE, which means Stay Away From (the) Edge.
Once we arrived at the visitor centre we split into 2 halves. Mrs Jackson's half went on a boat trip and Miss Grindle's half completed a workshop, where we made a canal out of sand.
On the boat we learnt lots of information about what the canals were used for and also about 'Leggers' who helped to get the boats through the tunnel. Leggers weren't paid for their job, instead they were given tokens which could be spent in the canal shop or the canal pub. During the workshop, staff were really impressed with our knowledge of the canals.
We then had lunch and played for a short time on the play area, before swapping over and completing the other activity.
We had a lovely day and certainly learnt lots.
The adults were proud of our attitude and behaviour!
Well done Year 5 - a great day!
